Country overview

About Belgium

Belgium is a federal constitutional monarchy in north-western Europe. Brussels is the capital and the seat of the main European Union institutions. About 11.7 million people live here. It borders France, the Netherlands, Germany and Luxembourg, with a short North Sea coast. Dutch is spoken in Flanders, French in Wallonia, and German in the eastern cantons. The euro is the currency.

Belgium is a founding member of the European Union, in the euro area, and in Schengen. Brussels hosts the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, and sessions of the European Parliament, as well as NATO headquarters. The country is a logistics and services hub between France, Germany and the Netherlands, with a high standard of living and a civil-law system that businesses in the region already know.

Brikseka forms Belgian companies. The usual vehicle is a société à responsabilité limitée (SRL), also called a besloten vennootschap (BV). A notarial deed is required. There is no fixed statutory minimum share capital, but founders must provide sufficient starting equity and a financial plan. Company documents can often be prepared remotely; identification, banking, or immigration may still require travel.

We then advise on a business bank account and payment gateways such as Stripe and PayPal. Approvals are decided by the providers. If your aim is to live in Belgium, company formation is not a residence permit — that is a separate immigration file, which we also advise on.

How we work

From briefing to a registered company

  1. Briefing

We review your business, the right entity for this country, costs, and whether a visit is likely.

  2. Company formation

Local counsel, notary where required, and the commercial register. We coordinate the documents through to a registered company.

  3. Banking and payments

After the company exists, we prepare applications for a business account and payment gateways.

  4. After incorporation

Statutory records, a named contact, and introductions to accounting so the company can operate.

After the company exists

Payment gateways

  • Stripe, subject to Stripe’s approval
  • PayPal Business, subject to PayPal’s approval

Operating stack

Business banking

  • Wise Business, opened in the company name, subject to Wise’s approval
  • Belgian banks typically expect a real operating presence
