Country overview

About Romania

Romania is a republic in South-Eastern Europe. Bucharest is the capital and the largest city. About 19 million people live here. It borders Hungary, Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria and Serbia, with a Black Sea coast. Romanian is the official language. The currency is the leu (RON), not the euro.

Romania joined the European Union in 2007 and is in Schengen. It is one of the larger EU markets by population, with a growing services and technology sector around Bucharest and Cluj, and substantial industrial and agricultural regions. English is widely used in business in the larger cities. The legal system is civil law.

Brikseka forms Romanian companies. The usual vehicle is a societate cu răspundere limitată (SRL). Statutory registry costs are relatively low, and a complete file can often be registered in a matter of working days. No visit is required to incorporate. Banking for non-resident owners is tighter than the registry step.

We then advise on a business bank account and payment gateways such as Stripe and PayPal. Approvals are decided by the providers. If your aim is to live in Romania, company formation is not a residence permit — that is a separate immigration file, which we also advise on.

  • Company formation

We form an SRL at the trade register, then stay with the file through banking and payments.

  • European Union

EU member since 2007 and in Schengen. The leu is the currency. A Romanian company sits inside the single market.

  • Scale

One of the EU’s larger domestic markets, with Bucharest as the commercial centre and a Black Sea coastline.

  • Tax setting

Headline corporate income tax is published at 16 percent, with micro-enterprise rules for qualifying small companies. We confirm the live position before you proceed.

How we work

From briefing to a registered company

  1. Briefing

We review your business, the right entity for this country, costs, and whether a visit is likely.

  2. Company formation

Local counsel, notary where required, and the commercial register. We coordinate the documents through to a registered company.

  3. Banking and payments

After the company exists, we prepare applications for a business account and payment gateways.

  4. After incorporation

Statutory records, a named contact, and introductions to accounting so the company can operate.

After the company exists

Payment gateways

  • Stripe, subject to Stripe’s approval
  • PayPal Business, subject to PayPal’s approval

Operating stack

Business banking

  • Wise Business, opened in the company name, subject to Wise’s approval
  • Romanian banks are tighter for non-resident owners

Provider lists are indicative. We confirm current availability, government fees, and account-opening requirements during consultation.

Business Tools covers payment gateways, business accounts, email, websites, and related tools after the company exists.
